Luray is the indie-banjo creation of Shannon Carey. With production help from brother Sean Carey (of S. Carey and Bon Iver), Luray’s unique sound creates strange and lovely bedfellows of different genres. Banjos, vibes, pedal steel, and ambient vocals make up this bluegrass-trained songwriter’s new and vibrant approach to making music. The end result is somewhere between Iron & Wine and Emmylou Harris. Debuting last summer, Luray has played at the Rock & Roll Hotel, Jammin’ Java, and the Black Cat in DC, as well as CMJ festival, Cameo Gallery, and Pianos in New York City.
Luray makes its Richmond debut at the Camel on Saturday, May 11 with The Low Branches and Nick Coward and the Last Battle. Richmonders Brian Cruse on bass and CJ Wolfe on drums (who play in numerous other groups including The Larri Branch Agenda, The JSmith Trio & Sueños Gitanos) will be performing with Luray.
