Why You Should Go See Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe at Friday Cheers

Karl_Denson_Tiny_Universe-Brothers_Keepers_promo_shot_bOn the fence about whether to go to Friday Cheers this week to catch Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe? Here are some reason why you absolutely must go.

* Karl Denson has not only performed in Lenny Kravitz’s band (the solo on “Let Love Rule” was his), he’s also worked with Jack DeJohnette, Dave Holland, the Blind Boys of Alabama, Blackalicious and Stanton Moore among numerous others.

* His 2009 album “Brother’s Keeper” is one of the best jazz funk albums around. It made my best albums of 2009 list and it’s still enjoyable to this day.

* Richmond’s own DJ Williams is part of the group. And if you’ve ever seen DJ Williams perform, you know that he alone can put on one hell of a party.

* Local funk band The Rootdowns are opening.

I also have two tickets to the show to give away to a lucky reader. All you have to do is email me at rvaplaylist@gmail.com with Friday Cheers in the subject. Entries must be in by 5 p.m. Thursday.

Watch this video of the band performing at Camp Barefoot Music & Arts Festival last year.
