Bringing together 14 of Richmond’s best jazz musicians, “A Richmond Big Band Christmas” will feature holiday classics like “Go Tell It On the Mountain” and “Joy to the World,” redone in energetic, modern arrangements. Taylor Barnett (member of No BS! Brass, assistant professor of music at VCU) will direct the ensemble which includes vocalists Laura Ann Singh (Quatro na Bossa, Miramar), Terri Simpson (Butterbean Quartet), and Rudy Faulkner (Rudy Faulkner and FRIENDS), as well as members of No BS! Brass, Bio Ritmo, Old New Things, the RVA Big Band, the Upper East Side Big Band, the Butterbean Jazz Quartet and more.
The event will be held at the Singleton Center for the Performing Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University on Sunday, December 14, 2014 with performances at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. (The 4 p.m. show is apparently already sold out). Proceeds from this family-friendly show will benefit CrossOver Healthcare Ministry, Virginia’s largest free healthcare clinic which provides quality healthcare to the uninsured in the greater Richmond Metropolitan area.
